Germiston Simmer Junior Rugby

About Us

Rugby stands as a globally embraced sport played by men, women, boys, and girls alike. With over 8.5 million participants ranging in age from six to 60+, the game accommodates individuals of diverse shapes, sizes, and abilities owing to its varied skills and physical demands.

Based in Germiston, Germiston Simmer Junior Rugby Club is dedicated to serving our local community. We strive to provide every child in our vicinity with the opportunity to learn and engage in the game of rugby, fostering a commitment to supporting and enhancing the skills of our youth.

Rugby proves to be an excellent choice for your son or daughter, aged seven to eighteen, offering them the chance to play a game that instils leadership both on and off the field. Recognizing that our youth is our future, our club is affiliated with the Golden Lions Rugby Union, competing against 22 Junior Rugby Clubs spread throughout the GLRU territory. This entails over 3500 players participating in rugby every Saturday, supported by up to 7000 parents and spectators throughout the season.

The purpose of Youth Rugby, supported by the Golden Lions Rugby Union and the BokSmart National Rugby Safety Program, is to provide a safe, professional, well-managed, and structured environment for all those eager to partake in the game.

The landscape of youth club rugby has transformed in recent years, marked by the active involvement of the Golden Lions Rugby Union and the BokSmart National Rugby Safety Program, ensuring a professional, healthy, and secure playing environment for players, coaches, referees, and spectators alike.

Annually, the GLRU Youth Rugby offers standout players from all GLRU youth clubs the opportunity to represent the Golden Lions in the Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT), officially recognized by the South African Rugby Union (SARU). This tournament, featuring other unions like the Sharks, Bulls, and Falcons, along with numerous invitational sides, serves as a platform for aspiring talent.

In 2015, of the 22 players selected for the under-18 Rooibokke (GLRU Youth Rugby), eight secured university bursaries after being scouted at the tournament. These opportunities underscore the value of the rugby development program and the dedicated efforts of our coaches, club managers, and parents.
